Château Pontet-Canet 2010
Château Pontet-Canet 2010 Magnum
Château Pontet-Canet 2010 Magnum is a cult Pauillac (5ème Grand Cru Classé) and a milestone in the estate's recent history: it was the first vintage to be fully certified organic and biodynamic, something unique among the Médoc classified growths that year. In 2010, the cycle began a little later and unstable flowering caused some “bagoinha” (fewer berries), especially in the old Merlot plots; then, sun and drought dominated until the harvest, paving the way for an exceptional year.
Vinification: In the vineyard, the team intensified their work with draft horses, reducing the use of tractors and reinforcing their understanding of the terroir — a philosophy in which “great wine is born first in the vineyard.” The harvest took place from September 29 to October 17.
Tasting notes (producer): deep crimson, almost black color; vibrant and complex nose with violet, blackberry, blackcurrant, and cherry. On the palate, assertive structure and great length, with radiant fruit, remarkable freshness, “sparkling” substance, and patrician tannins—fine, confident, and elegant—leaving a long memory of pure pleasure.
Grape varieties (2010 blend): 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, 1% Petit Verdot. Alcohol: 14.5%.

The aromas to this are incredible with blueberry, minerals, dried flowers, and stones. It goes to dried meat and spices. Full body and incredibly integrated with blackberry, licorice, and minerals. There's a wonderful purity to this. It goes on for minutes. The quality of tannins is amazing. Seamless. There's an amazing transparency that shows you all the elements of the wine's unique terroir.
An absolutely amazing wine, from grapes harvested between the end of September and October 17, this blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot has close to 15% natural alcohol. It comes from one of the few biodynamic vineyards in Bordeaux, but you are likely to see many more, given the success that Tesseron seems to be having at all levels, both in his vineyards and in his fermentation/winemaking. An astounding, compelling wine with the classic Pauillac nose more often associated with its cross-street neighbor, Mouton-Rothschild, creme de cassis, there are also some violets and other assorted floral notes. The wine has off-the-charts massiveness and intensity but never comes across as heavy, overbearing or astringent. The freshness, laser-like precision, and full-bodied, massive richness and extract are simply remarkable to behold and experience. It is very easy, to become jaded tasting such great wines from a great vintage, but it is really a privilege to taste something as amazing as this. (RP)
The 2010 Pontet-Canet is a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot. Deep garnet-black in color, it sashays out of the glass with opulent scents of Chinese five spice, smoked meats, and cigar box, over a core of prunes, redcurrant jelly, and fruitcake with a waft of espresso. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has a firm, grainy structure with tons of freshness supporting the decadent spice and fruit preserves layers, finishing with great length. It is delicious to drink now! (LPB)
Gorgeous bright and juicy cherry and cassis, pencil lead and floral aromas seduce you. The palate is long and spherical. This, the first vintage certified both organic and biodynamic, has impressive depth and power delivered with refinement. The power of Lynch-Bages but with a bit more elegance. A long, palate-enveloping finish. You can serve with haute cuisine, but why not a high-quality hamburger? Sometimes the simplest dishes, with quality ingredients, go best with top wine. (PK)
Deep plum in colour at 11 years old, barely budging through the mid palate. A vintage that rivals the best ever in Bordeaux, this is richly layered with sweet liqourice, eucalyptus, cigar box, blackberry and cassis, with a fennel twist on the finish. Classically Pauillac, stately, ageing slowly but surely, and only now at the stage where you can confidently open it to drink over supper - with a long carafe first of up to 6 hours. Relatively high alcohol for a Pauillac wine adds to the round mouthfeel but not a trace of heat. Harvest September 29 to October 17. First year of biodynamic certification.
Dense, yes, but this is also a handsome wine that balances complex tannins with pure black currant fruits that shine. This biodynamic wine has a generous, full and rich feel, ripe with just a touch of restraint. The greatness of the wine shows in its purity with a deceptive simplicity that hides the final complex tannins and structure. (RV)
This is big, broad and powerfully rendered, but remarkably polished and refined at the same time. An enormous core of roasted fig, blackberry and black currant fruit is suavely wrapped with roasted apple wood and sandalwood, while dark espresso, loam and warm paving stone notes drive the finish. Very long, with a great tug of scorched earth at the end. A terrific combination of power and precision. (JM)
