Valtuille La Vitoriana 2023
Valtuille La Vitoriana 2023
Valtuille La Vitoriana 2023 is a unique red wine from the Bierzo region, made from old Mencía vines planted in the ‘La Vitoriana’ area of Valtuille de Abajo. The vines, which are around 95 years old, produce 2kg per vine and are located on a west-facing slope, protected by the Roman fort of La Ventosa. The soil has a high clay and organic matter content and is free of pebbles, characteristics that contribute to the freshness and elegance of the wine, an identity that the producing family, after three generations working in this area, wanted to highlight. This is a top terroir wine from Bierzo, designed for lovers of complex reds with great longevity!
Vinification: Manual harvest in 15kg boxes. Alcoholic fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks, using carbon dioxide in the first phase. After alcoholic fermentation, the wine is placed in two 225-litre French oak barrels, where malolactic fermentation takes place, completing its 10-month stay, after which the wine rests for the necessary time before being marketed.
Tasting Notes: Intense red colour with violet hues. Very aromatic and fresh on the nose. Red and black fruits, such as blackberry or plum. A wine with great depth and balance in its structure. Perfect for long ageing.

The 2023 Valtuille La Vitoriana was produced with grapes from one of the family's oldest plots, one of the oldest vineyards in the village too, where the soils are stony, with quartzite and clay. It fermented with 30% full clusters in an oak vat with a long maceration of 60 days and aged in one 500-liter oak barrel for one year. In 2023, the alcohol percentages were lower—this comes in at 12.92% and has a pH of 3.47, lower for Mencía. It's serious, elegant and very clean, with great depth and complexity. It's the most austere and backward of the 2023s and takes time to open up in the glass. There was more malic acid, because the vintage was less ripe, and there's a faint lactic touch. This should age beautifully in bottle, but I'd wait a bit to pull the cork. Only 620 bottles were filled in May 2025.
From stony clay soils, this wine shows a profound and classic Valtuille profile. Dark red berry and blackberry fruit dominate, backed by grippy tannins that add structure. It is aged in one single 500L barrel for 12 months, going some way to softening the old vine concentration but it will need significant time to open up. 2025-2033
The 2023 Valtuille La Vitoriana is a small, two-barrel production from the exclusive La Vitoriana paraje in Valtuille de Arriba. Precise and expressive, it has violet, rose, a touch of pomegranate and a whisper of strawberry yogurt on the nose. This is juicy and grippy on the palate, with a long, fruit-driven finish. It is a gorgeously pure wine that will improve in bottle. The 2023 seduces with its nuanced depth.
