Nossa Calcário Bical 2023 comes from the heart of Bairrada (Óis do Bairro village). Bical de Óis do Bairro is known for its exceptional quality. Working with biodynamic practices and drawing inspiration from Filipa's grandmother's viticulture helped her understand the notion of ‘un terroir unique’ for Bical. It pairs perfectly with elegant meals, fine fish, roast veal and mature cheeses. It will age very well for 10 years.

Vinification: Hand-picked, followed by pressing to obtain a slow extraction. Ageing in barrels after slight decanting. Grapes in 500-600L oak barrels and a 2000L vat, where alcoholic and malolactic fermentation will take place with indigenous yeasts and native bacteria. Ageing on fine lees (10 months). One month before bottling, the wine from different barrels is placed in a tank for blending.

Tasting Notes: 

Bright and intense straw yellow with a greenish rim, good viscosity. Very mineral nose with a smoky touch due to the limestone soil. Distinct fruity touch of pears and a slightly nutty character. After some time in the glass, it also reveals thyme and honey. On the palate, refined, creamy, relatively smooth and with minerality present, a kind of salinity due to the typical Atlantic climate. Very broad on the palate, with an almost crunchy texture. Finish is voluptuous, with very precise notes of ripe and preserved fruit.

A pure and crisp bical with a timid nose of fennel, pears and touches of oyster shells and limes. This is really minerally and agile, with incisive acidity and subtle stone fruit character in the finish. Balanced and graceful. This comes from various vineyards planted, as its name suggests, in calcareous soils in the village of Óis do Bairro. Fermented and aged in 500- and 2,000-liter foudres. From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter and Ecocert certification. Drink now.

The super austere and mineral white 2023 Nossa Calcário Bical was produced with grapes from the village of Óis do Barro, a classical zone for whites in Bairrada, where they are located. It fermented in 500- and 600-liter barrels and a 2,000-liter oak vat with indigenous years and was put through full malolactic too, then kept for 10 months with the fine lees, which were not stirred. This is not about the fruit but about the soil. It has the profile of an austere white from Bairrada that I love so much, with a medium-bodied palate, purity and precision, balanced, with pungent flavors. 2023 saw a good crop, and it combined quantity and quality. This wine has 12.3% alcohol and notable freshness, denoted by a pH of 3.2. 10,266 bottles and 400 magnums were produced. It was bottled in June 2024.
