Guado Al Tasso 2022

Guado Al Tasso 2022 is a highly elegant Bolgheri Superiore produced by Antinori at Tenuta Guado al Tasso. It has been produced since 1990 from vines planted in alluvial soils whose composition varies between sandy-clay and clay-loam. The 2022 vintage is concentrated, with fine tannins and excellent freshness, reflecting the distinctive character of the territory.

Vinification: Grapes are selected before destemming and immediately afterwards. Each plot is subdivided into smaller blocks and the grapes are harvested separately and then fermented. Fermentation and maceration in temperature-controlled stainless-steel vats for 18 to 25 days. The wine was transferred directly to barrels, where malolactic fermentation was completed at the end of the year. In February, the wine from the best vineyard blocks was selected and the final blend was made. It was transferred again to new French oak barrels, where it aged until bottling (May 2024).

Tasting Notes: Intense ruby colour. The nose opens with floral notes and aromas of red fruits leading to sweet spice notes, especially tobacco and liquorice root. On the palate, it is silky and flavourful, with remarkable balance and dimension that perfectly complement the elegant tannic structure. It can be enjoyed immediately but has excellent ageing potential for the coming years.

Grape Varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot

A complex and restrained wine with classic aromas of straw, cassis and carob and a touch of leaves. The palate is polished and full-bodied with smooth, refined tannins. Chewy in the finish, with refreshing acidity and a toasty Mediterranean aftertaste. Drinkable now, but best in two or three years.

Bright medium red. Mature, sweet nose, quite ‘international’. This wine would appeal to anyone, even if it is not the most distinctive for a wine connoisseur. Still a little astringent with a winey finish, but this is normal for a wine intended for ageing.

The Marchesi Antinori 2022 Bolgheri Superiore Guado al Tasso (a blend of 44% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Cabernet Franc and 25% Merlot) is an unexpected wine. I was prepared for more overt ripeness but instead was greeted by a delightful mineral note of graphite or lead pencil that gives much needed contouring to this full-bodied Tuscan red. The wine is velvety and richly textured at its core, but it is also seamless with very pleasurable sweetness. All new oak adds hints of vanilla and spice. If you follow this wine, you'll notice that the percentage of Cabernet Franc has been increasing in tiny notches over the years. "Blending is key to achieving balance in a vintage like this," says Marchesi Antinori Managing Director Renzo Cotarella. Production this vintage is 140,000 bottles.

An expressive, polished red, featuring black cherry, blackberry, floral, iron and oak spice aromas and flavors. Fluid and juicy, with refined tannins for support and echoes of fruit and spices on the finish. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. Best from 2028 through 2042. 11,540 cases made, 2,300 cases imported.

Offering a gorgeous aromatic profile of thyme, mint, sage and menthol with ripe dark berries, this is a superb Guado al Tasso. A fresh mouthful of cool and juicy black and blue fruits is emphasised by a streak of salinity before a return of those wonderful Mediterranean herbs. ‘I think 2022 in this moment is more ready than 2021,’ says Marco Ferrarese, winemaker and estate director.
