Quinta Nova de Nossa Senhora do Carmo Mirabilis White 2023

Mirabilis White 2023, as its Latin name suggests, is a wonderful wine. Quinta Nova had been studying the possibility of producing a Great White Wine from the Douro since 2008. Since then, they have been searching tirelessly for small growers with old and very old vines. At the same time, they studied several years of bottle ageing of different batches to understand the perfect marriage with wood. Finally, they decided to go to Burgundy to achieve the final touch that was missing to create this dream white wine!

Vinification: Hand-picked, carefully selecting small bunches and single berries, ensuring low yields, which increases the concentration of flavour and freshness. The grapes are pressed whole and the must ferments in French oak barrels (Tronçais, Vosges, Nevers, Jura) and Hungarian oak barrels of 2nd and 3rd year, keeping only 15% new wood so as not to mark and slowly integrate the intense fruit. The result is a wine of extreme elegance, where freshness and acidity intertwine.

Tasting Notes: Sublime, smooth and crisp on the palate, from small, century-old vines where Viosinho and Gouveio predominate, but also a wide variety of other very low-yielding grape varieties that are now almost extinct in the region.

Grape Varieties: Native grape varieties, including Viosinho and Gouveio.

The 2023 Mirabilis Branco comes in an oversized Burgundy bottle and has a showy, large nose and personality, with spice and ripe yellow fruit, notes of aromatic herbs and a lush and well-oaked palate. It was produced with the field blends from small plots of very old vines where Viosinho and Gouveio tend to dominate. It fermented in 300-liter French oak barrels and concrete vats and matured in used and new barrels and 30% in concrete for 10 months. It's ripe and powerful and comes in at 14% alcohol but keeping good freshness and acidity. It has a little too much oak at the moment, so I'd wait a couple more years for the oak to integrate. 25,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2024.
