Quinta do Crasto Vinha da Ponte 2019
Quinta do Crasto Vinha da Ponte 2019
Vinha da Ponte 2019 is an exceptional red wine from one of Quinta do Crasto's most emblematic plots, in the heart of the Douro. Made exclusively from old vines, it expresses the unique character of the Douro terroir with intensity and authenticity. This year's weather conditions were balanced, allowing the grapes to ripen slowly and completely, which resulted in a generous harvest in line with the quinta's production average.
Vinification: The grapes were rigorously sorted at the entrance to the winery. After total destemming and treading in a traditional press, the must was transferred to temperature-controlled stainless steel fermentation vats. At the end of the alcoholic fermentation, it was gently pressed. The wine was aged in 100% new French oak barrels for 20 months. The final blend is the result of selecting the best barrels.
Tasting Notes: Opaque, with vibrant shades of deep violet, the nose shows remarkable projection and aromatic complexity where aromas of wild Douro berries are in perfect balance with elegant spicy and cocoa notes. The palate is elegant, evolving into a wine with great volume and a very solid structure, made up of firm tannins with excellent texture. It finishes with great complexity and exceptional depth. A unique wine that captures the authentic essence of its terroir, reflecting the soul of Vinha da Ponte.

The 2019 Vinha da Ponte, a field blend from very old vines (100+ years), was aged in new French oak for 20 months. It comes in at 14.6% alcohol. Always one of the most intense offerings from Crasto, this is true to form this year. It starts with somewhat darker and ripe fruit, then it adds layer after layer of pure power. The tannins are not impossibly astringent, but if any of Crasto's offerings in this report will be deemed astringent, it will be this one. It grips the palate and doesn't let go. It's never a boldly flavorful wine, tending more to stern and serious, but it is one that should develop brilliantly as it ages. A couple of hours of aeration really helped this out. It expanded in the glass, became a bit more approachable and more expressive. It was always tight, though, if not quite as tight. We now have to speculate as to how long this will age. So, let's start here and take it in stages. There were just 4,900 bottles produced, plus some large-format bottles.
