Quinta do Crasto Vinha da Ponte 2000

Vinha da Ponte 2000 is one of Quinta do Crasto's and the Douro region's most distinctive wines. It's a super premium Douro DOC red wine that comes exclusively from a centenary vineyard with very low productivity, which naturally limits annual production to rarely more than 4,000 bottles. Bottled only in years of exceptional quality, this wine expresses intensity and vivacity in colour, reflecting all the unique character of the vineyard that gives it its name.

Vinification: After treading in a traditional wine press, the masses were transferred to an open stainless-steel vat with treaders where they fermented under temperature control for about a week. It aged in French oak barrels for 18 months. It was bottled without any fining or filtration, so it is subject to a slight deposit during ageing.

Tasting notes: Very lively and concentrated in colour, with a rich and intense aroma of ripe fruit that reveals the excellence of the year and dominates elegantly over the notes of wood. In the mouth, the great structure given by the grapes from old vines is perfectly integrated with the tannins of the wood, resulting in a persistent, complex and very pleasant wine.

The 2000 Vinha da Ponte is the first in this issue's vertical. In most respects, this is just fabulous. If you are a lover of mature Bordeaux and Burgundy, the fine acidity and complex, tertiary flavor nuances make this simply wonderful. Revel in its sexy maturity. Yet, it is only 15 years old. At least as this bottle shows, this tastes even older. The 2001 Maria Teresa, by contrast, seems far younger and fresher, with only one year difference in their vintage dates. To be sure, that might also be a difference in vintage character. In any event, this 2000 Ponte delivers an array of forest floor and earthy flavors, coupled with (after aeration) the dark chocolate of maturing Port. It is a wine aging quickly, yet rather gracefully. It is one of my favorites in the vertical for drinking right now. What happens in the future? Note that the structure is still beautiful. The tannins provide nice but controlled support and there is a lively feel to the wine. It may not stay at this level as long as we might have hoped, but let's worry about the future when it gets here. If you are a fan of mature wines, you'll understand why this is worthy of some plaudits just now. Remember, too, sometimes as wines age it is more about the bottle than the wine.

Full-bore, decadent red, with a smoky, spicy aroma and layers of rich blackberry, dark plum, cassis and meaty flavors that jump out of the glass at you. Concentrated notes of tar, dark chocolate and roasted meats dominate the finish; lush tannins complete the package. Tempting now. Best from 2004 through 2008. 250 cases made, 100 cases imported.

Deep dark ruby garnet, opaque core, intense violet reflections, delicately smoky on the nose, fine hints of spice, cloves, precious wood, coconut and cinnamon, sweet on the palate, fully ripe cherry fruit, the tannins are a little stricter here, overall somewhat restrained, sweet fruit in the finish, needs more bottle ageing, good potential for development once it has absorbed all the wood.
