Petrus 2012

Petrus is one of the most prestigious estates in Bordeaux and undoubtedly the most important in Pomerol. The wine comes from an 11.4 hectare vineyard in the eastern part of Pomerol

Vinification

The grapes are carefully harvested by hand in the afternoon, after the morning dew has evaporated, to avoid any dilution. Fermentation takes place in concrete vats.

Currently the amount of new oak is around 50 per cent. After 18 to 20 months in barrel, the wine is bottled unfiltered.

Tasting notes (Robert Parker)

‘Petrus 2012 demonstrated a fruit-orientated bouquet of ripe raspberry and wild strawberry, underneath which are aromas of graphite and forest floor. It seems refined, discreet and even indifferent. The palate is medium-bodied with a slightly savoury opening, as if there were a small drop of Cabernet Franc. The tannins are fine but firm, the red fruits are infused with cooked meat, black pepper and hints of sage, although I was hoping for a more full-bodied finish. This may well evolve over time, but it remains a majestic Pomerol that will probably deserve a higher score with bottle ageing

Looks much more evolved than Le Pin tasted alongside. Glowing ruby. Sweet and opulent with a really rich undertow. Not one of Petrus’s most glorious vintages but a lovely long, confident finish. (JR)

The 2012 Petrus demonstrated a forward, fruit-driven, ripe raspberry and wild strawberry bouquet underneath which lies graphite and forest floor aromas. It seems refined, understated, nonchalant even. The palate is medium-bodied with a slightly savory opening, as if there was a tiny drop of Cabernet Franc. The tannins are fine but firm, the red fruit infused with cooked meat, black pepper and sage notes, although I was anticipating a finish armed with more body. That may well develop in time, yet it remains a regal Pomerol that will probably merit a higher score with bottle age, hence the plus-sign against the score. Tasted January 2016. (NM) 96+

This shows fabulous length with a chocolate, berry and mineral undertone. Licorice and currants too. Full body yet refined with seamless tannins. Goes on for minutes. It shows such amazing length and elegance. Depth. Phenomenal structure here, especially for the vintage.

Another great wine from Pétrus, this has enormous depths without losing any of the fruit or freshness of Merlot in 2012. It's massive while also elegant, weighty, richly full-bodied and also structured. At this stage the wine does show some signs of wood aging, which will diminish as it ages. The fruitiness is deceptive because this wine demands aging. *Cellar Selection* (RV)

This has some serious muscle, with rivets of graphite studding a beam of dense, gravelly grip that holds the core of steeped plum and raspberry notes together. Very long, with superior cut. A graphite note powers through the finish, while the fruit drips on and on. *Collectible* (JM)

One of the stars this year. Ripe, seductive nose with blackcurrant, blackberry and liquorish notes. Shows upfront charm but the palate has power, depth and distinction. Rounded tannins. Superb length. (JL)
