Biondi Santi, Brunello di Montalcino 2017

Biondi-Santi is claimed to be the first Brunello in history and for 150 years has embodied the vision that inspired Clemente Santi in the 19th century to create its first expression.

The Biondi Santi Vineyard has 32 hectares of Sangiovese, 5 hectares of which were planted between 1930 and 1972. The vineyards are divided into five plots, located around the town of Montalcino.

Vinification: The harvest began on 11 September. It was produced from a selection of Sangiovese Grosso from the estate's vineyards. It was vinified in vitrified cement containers with indigenous yeasts from the vineyards themselves. It was then aged for 24/30 months in Slavonian oak barrels.

Producer's tasting notes: The bouquet of Brunello 2017 is initially quite shy, gradually revealing the breadth and depth of its aromatic elegance. Hints of red cherry stand out among the red fruits, accompanied by intriguing notes of white pepper, dried tobacco leaves, liquorice root and citrus peel. On the palate, its fruity core is surprisingly fragrant and has an enviable balance between fine-textured tannins and refreshing acidity.

Sweet berry, orange peel, cedar, bark and forest flower aromas follow through to a medium to full body, with linear and fine tannins and a crunchy undertone. It’s very subtle and fresh for a 2017. Crisp and vivid. It’s refined and acid-driven. Needs three to four years more to soften. Try after 2026.

The 2017 Brunello Di Montalcino is surprising in its freshness, considering the warmth of the vintage, and speaks to the cooler, northern-facing exposition of the estate. It is refined with ripe red cherry, raspberry, anise, and incense and is fresh with cherry fruit, warming spices, macchia, and herbes de Provence. It is ripe though it maintains a medium frame, with well-managed tannins and balanced acidity. It is a lovely and charming wine and is rather approachable now. Drink 2024-2040.

A delicately sweet note of fresh summer cherry is a precursor to budding complexity and a very articulate bouquet that opens quickly in the glass. Immediately pleasing fruit is a characteristic of the 2017 growing season that had above average temperatures and drought throughout the summer. The resistant 2017 Brunello di Montalcino takes on these challenges without missing a beat. The wine's celebrated acidity and its small berry nuances remain intact. The tannins are silky and the wine's flavors fade slowly even after you have taken your last sip.

Brightening, medium dense garnet red colour. Opens on the nose with notes of tea, delicate nuances of rose petals, as well as cherry and some raspberry. On the palate offers vivid fruit, opens with grippy, firm tannins, fresh acidity, mineral, accentuated earthy notes on the finish.

Day one: Lustrous mid ruby with orange tinges. A subdued nose that is slow to open up. Some considerable concentration reveals itself with aeration. Balsamic more than fruity at this moment. A polished, suave red-fruit palate that is still a little embryonic and with integrated, tangy acidity and finely ground tannins. Seems to veer off the usual Biondi-Santi style, in that it is less edgy, nervous and austere. That could be due to the hot year, but it certainly is well balanced.
Day two: The nose doesn’t show any deterioration from having been opened 24 hours previously. Quite pure, focused and concentrated but, at the same time, poised, with minerally notes of earth and just a hint of tobacco. Elegant and polished on the palate, with the tangy acidity almost completely integrated. Long and a little mouth-filling and focused. Seems softer than in previous vintages, but no less robust.
Day three: A little broader and more open on the nose, with rich red fruit; but the palate is taut and the red fruit a little more tangy and with long, well-behaved tannins. (WS)

A fresh, energetic red, boasting black cherry, blackberry, iron, rosemary and stone flavors. Reveals assertive tannins that ply the long finish for now, but this is all about balance and definition. Shows terrific length. Best from 2025 through 2043.
