Rauzan-Segla 2023

Château Rauzan-Ségla is a Second Growth from Margaux in Bordeaux, according to the Medoc and Graves classification of 1855. The wine is rich and concentrated and is often considered one of the best quality-price wines in Margaux. This 2023 Rauzan-Ségla is no exception.

Vinification

Since 1994 and its acquisition by fashion giant Chanel, quality has improved at Rauzan-Ségla. Mechanical harvesting was eliminated and the vines were worked plot by plot. The grapes are hand-selected and aged in high-quality Sessile oak barrels. The Grand Vin spends 18 months in oak, with 15% new wood.

Producer's tasting notes

"Elegant rather than fleshy, restrained rather than opulent, the 2023 vintage displays impressive complexity and balance. A fine, refined wine that proudly displays its red character, in the eye, on the nose and on the palate. The fresh, ripe red of redcurrant and blackcurrant. The fresh, floral red of the morning rose. The woody red of cedar. The spicy red of pink pepper. A very sophisticated character. Meticulous proportions and harmony. Sap, fruit and flower come together in this wine, all with the same subtlety. And depth, there's no doubt about it.

A Rauzan-Segla with solid tannins that are muscular, well toned and beautiful. Black currants, blueberries and flowers. Chewy finish. One for the cellar. Classic. The cabernet went to the gym. 85% cabernet sauvignon, one of highest percentages ever. (4/2024)

The 2023 Rauzan-Ségla is fabulous. Rich, dense and explosive, the 2023 soars out of the glass with captivating aromatics. Readers will find a vertical, deep Margaux endowed with tremendous character and nuance. All the elements are so well-balanced. Crushed rocks, plum, blood orange, spice and leather are some of the notes that explode into the finish. In 2023, the Grand Vin is distinctly red-fruited and vibrant. Rauzan-Ségla is one of the most memorable wines of the vintage. It was nothing short of stellar on the four occasions I tasted it. (AG) (4/2024)

The 2023 Rauzan-Segla is deep garnet-purple in color. It prances out with flamboyant notes of Morello cherries, blackcurrant pastilles, violets, and licorice giving way to suggestions of rosebud tea, crushed rocks, and Sichuan pepper. The medium-bodied palate delivers amazing tension to offset the shiny black and red berry layers, framed by velvety tannins, finishing long and perfumed. This is gorgeous! (5/2024)

Blue fruits, wax crayon on the nose, some soft floral notes, a little quiet aromatically. Intense and forward, this is bright and focussed, a little more velvety than Segla, this has a verticality but with a deep mid palate that really extends giving more of a feeling of controlled power. Certainly not shouting but this is very polished. Quite a serious take, more dark fruit, less lively crunchy red fruit, A great result with structure and volume. There's a balance between intensity and freshness but all delivered subtly and with class. More Margaux than some others in the vintage, soft tannins give a touch of voluptuousness. Touches of wet stone also linger on the finish. A lot to like here. (GH) (4/2024)

Inkier and more luscious in texture than the Ségla, this has rich layers to its aromatic palate, showing rhubarb, savoury cassis and blueberry, peony, rose petals, soot, gunsmoke, graphite, flint, weight and texture, spiralling upwards. Wonderful expression of a wine that seems supremely Margaux and supremely Rauzan Ségla. (4/2024)

The 2023 Rauzan-Ségla shows considerable promise, unwinding in the glass with aromas of cherries, dark berries and plums mingled with hints of pencil shavings and violets. Medium to full-bodied, layered and concentrated, it's deep and fleshy, with terrific purity of fruit, supple tannins and a long, resonant finish. This classic in the making is a blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13.5% Merlot and 1.5% Petit Verdot. (WK) (4/2024)

This estate continues to never put a foot wrong, and their 2023 Château Rauzan-Ségla is one class act. Deep purple-hued, with fabulous aromatics of cassis, smoky blue fruits, tobacco, spicy oak, and subtle floral notes, it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, a polished, incredibly elegant mouthfeel, and ripe, fine-grained tannins. It's not a blockbuster, but it shines for its flawless balance, complexity, and length. 93-95+ (5/2024)
