Vinha dos Aards 2020
Vinha dos Aards 2020
Vinha dos Aards is a wine made from one of the plots on the first line of the sea, in the 1st Jeirões, which was sold by the family in 1923, replanted by the Cardozos in 1924 and which passes into our hands today.
Winemaking
Manual harvest, selection on a sorting table, direct pressing, cold decanting for 12 hours, spontaneous fermentation. The first presses in stainless steel in a horizontal vat (60%) and the second presses in French oak barrels with at least 3 years of use (40%). Sulphur dioxide only applied after fermentation. Aged for 18 months on the lees without batonnage.
Producer's tasting notes
Citrus yellow colour with hints of straw, iodine, salt, lime and pitanga aromas. In the mouth, a dense, very concentrated attack, vibrant acidity that remains until the end of the tasting. Then salt, salt, salt and iodine, it's a wine that could only have been born at sea.
Production
1,066 bottles of 0.75 litres released in April 2023.

Slightly less reduction on the nose than on the Utras 2020. But more on the palate, with a toasty richness. More closed than the Utras but with incredible concentration, purity and length. Ultra-salty. Outstanding wine. (JH)
Only 1.45ha. Mostly Arinto from the Azores from 100-year-old vines 60 metres from the sea and organically grown. A sublime wine, with a reduction evoking flint and grapefruit, fresh citrus fruit in the background. Incredibly precise on the palate, intense and defined, compact and almost creamy, finishing with perfect, saline acidity. Fabulous!
