Primus Quinta da Pellada 2021
Quinta da Pellada Primus 2021
Primus is one of the most recognisable wines from the prestigious Quinta da Pellada, where Álvaro de Castro works his magic. On the estate, the soil type is ganitic with lines of clay and sand and the vines are around 70 years old with around 5,000 vines per hectare, situated at a height of 500 metres.
Vinification: After 24 hours of skin contact on the day of the harvest, a very slow fermentation followed, first in stainless steel and then in used barrels. It was aged for 9 months in a cement egg with fine lees, always topped up, without successive additions of sulphur dioxide. It was then bottled, with the remainder aged in the bottle, seeking excellence in ageing. This wine only went on the market after two years of ageing
Tasting Notes: There's a sense of harmony and elegance that I like a lot, and there's freshness and good vibrancy on the palate. It has pungent flavours, purity and symmetry with citrus freshness and a long, dry, savoury finish, salted with the granularity of the granite soils.
Grape varieties: 19 field blends such as Encruzado, Cercial, Bical, Verdelho, Málvasia, Terrantez, Cachorrinho, Douradinha, etc...

They had to harvest the Bical before the rest of the white grapes for the 2021 Primus, but they finally fermented together and the Bical was used as a starter ("pied de cuve") for the fermentation of the rest. There is a sense of harmony and elegance that I like very much, and there is freshness and good vibrancy on the palate. It has pungent flavors, purity and symmetry with citrus freshness and a long, dry, tasty, salty finish with the granularity of the granite soils. It has 13% alcohol and feels very balanced.
This lightly wood-aged wine is spicy with fragrant white-fruit flavors. Produced from a field blend of old vines, it has richness as well as plenty of underlying acidity. Drink now.
